A new biography has made explosive claims that Prince William insisted on banishing Prince Andrew from the royal family "before the rot set in" following his disastrous 2019 Newsnight interview. The book, written by the Mirror's royal editor Russell Myers, alleges the Prince of Wales viewed his uncle as a grave threat to the monarchy's future amid the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
William's Urgent Demands Met with Royal Resistance
The upcoming biography about the Prince and Princess of Wales reveals that William urgently pressed both King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth to force Andrew out of the family. According to palace sources quoted in the book, William was "adamant the whole episode would never go away" and believed there was "absolutely no upside in Andrew being protected."
This stance reportedly provoked a furious reaction from his father, King Charles, who "put him in his place." The monarch was allegedly "engaged in a full-scale fire fight" over the matter, with William fearing the ongoing Epstein revelations posed an existential threat to the royal institution.
A Clear and Uncompromising Position
One palace source detailed William's uncompromising position: "His view was crystal clear, Andrew shouldn't be anywhere near the family under any circumstances, not by association, not at family functions, anywhere." The source added that each new revelation about Andrew's connections was "a stain on all of the family."
The biography claims William "never much liked his uncle and wanted him out of the picture immediately before the rot further set in." Another source explained: "Once you understand the fact that everything that happens in the here and now, affects everything in the future, William's future, it is very easy to put yourself in his shoes."
The Infamous Newsnight Interview and Fallout
The controversy stems from Andrew's now-infamous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, where he was questioned about sexual abuse allegations made by the late Virginia Giuffre. Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming he had "no recollection" of meeting Giuffre and suggesting an alibi involving a Pizza Express visit in Woking.
Critically, Andrew failed to apologize for his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein during the interview. This, combined with subsequent document releases detailing their connections, led to Andrew being stripped of all his titles, including Duke of York, in October following the Epstein files release.
Recent Developments and Public Statements
This week marked the first time the Prince and Princess of Wales publicly addressed the Epstein scandal, stating they have been "deeply concerned" over the ongoing revelations surrounding Andrew. Meanwhile, US Congress members have urged King Charles to "answer what he knew" about his brother's Epstein ties and compel him to testify in the United States.
The latest tranche of released documents alleges Andrew shared confidential reports with Epstein that he accessed in his role as a UK trade envoy. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson stated the King had "profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's conduct."
The Independent has contacted both Buckingham Palace and Andrew's representatives for comment on these latest claims from the biography, which paints a picture of deep royal division over how to handle the most damaging scandal to hit the monarchy in decades.
