Prince William stepped in with a light-hearted joke after presenter Gethin Jones asked Prince George whether he wanted to see his parents ride a tandem bike during a family visit to Wales House at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Prince of Wales joined Princess Kate and their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, for a day of netball and cycling events. It was the first time eight-year-old Louis had been considered old enough to join his siblings at the Games, and the occasion also marked the first official public engagement in Scotland for all three children together. During the day they met the tournament mascot, Finnie the Unicorn, and Charlotte and Louis updated the live medal tally.
Gethin Jones's question to the children
At Wales House, Team Wales's central hub, Princess Kate told the group that five-time Olympic gold-medallist cyclist Dame Laura Kenny, whom the family had just met, had tried to convince her and William to try track cycling. Kate said: "Be careful what you wish for, as they want to put us on a tandem bike in the velodrome."
Jones then asked all three children: "Would you like to see mum and dad on a tandem in the velodrome later?" Only George answered, replying swiftly: "No." The blunt response prompted William to joke: "We embarrass you enough as it is."
Meeting athletes and watching sport
The family also met twin Welsh gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper, who both won bronze medals at the Games last week. Kate turned to Louis and said: "Louis, you're perfecting your handstand at the moment." With his arms crossed, Louis replied: "A bit. But Charlotte says I'm not very good."
Earlier in the day, the Wales family watched Jamaica's monumental upset over Australia in the netball semi-finals at The Hydro. They later visited the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, where they met Hoy himself and Dame Laura, with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh also present. The judo finals at the Scottish Event Campus rounded off the sporting action.
After Wales House, the family visited youth charity SportsAid, of which Kate is a patron, and also met volunteers and competitors outside The Hydro.
