Prince Philip is said to be furious over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to step back from royal duties, with reports claiming he is 'spitting blood' over the announcement. The 98-year-old Duke of Edinburgh is understood to have barked 'what the hell are they playing at?' after being informed of Harry and Meghan's plans.
The couple announced on Wednesday their intention to become financially independent and split their time between the UK and North America. The Queen was reportedly unaware of the plans until reading about them on an iPad at her Sandringham estate. Prince Philip, who retired from public life in 2017, is said to have accused his grandson of disrespecting the monarch.
A source told The Sun on Sunday that Philip felt 'deeply hurt' and 'let down' by the couple's actions. The source added: 'He was spitting blood when aides informed him what had happened. Philip has accused Harry and Meghan of lacking respect and he is weary of their behaviour.'
The Queen has called a crisis summit for Monday at Sandringham, to be attended by herself, Prince Harry, Prince William, and Prince Charles. Meghan is expected to join via phone. The couple's statement, released on Instagram, said they intend to 'step back as senior members of the Royal Family' and 'work to become financially independent' while continuing to support the Queen.
Prince Philip recently spent several nights in a private hospital for treatment for a 'pre-existing condition' and was discharged just before Christmas. Harry and Meghan did not attend the royal festive celebrations at Sandringham, instead travelling to Canada for a six-week break.
