The Prince and Princess of Wales made an unannounced visit to Northern Ireland on Tuesday, where they toured a new £50 million fire service training centre in Cookstown, County Tyrone. The couple spent time with firefighters and trainees, observing realistic training scenarios including flood rescues and high-rise building operations.
During the visit, the couple took a short ride in a fire engine. Firefighters Caoimhe McNeice and Piarais McCaffery, who accompanied them, said the Princess jokingly asked for the sirens to be turned on and suggested that Prince William should take the wheel. However, the driver was strictly instructed not to exceed the speed limit or use the siren.
Kate remarked that she would have loved to “drive at the real speed and have the sirens on,” according to Ms McNeice. The light-hearted moment added a personal touch to the engagement, which marked the couple’s first joint trip to Northern Ireland in three years.
The visit also included a demonstration of a flood simulator, where William and Kate attempted to rescue mock casualties by throwing a rescue line, though they were unsuccessful in their initial attempt. Chief Fire Officer Aidan Jennings described the day as “a proud and unforgettable day” for the service.
The trip highlighted rural opportunities and young entrepreneurship, consistent with Kensington Palace’s statement that the couple would “spend the day visiting innovative organisations that showcase growth and investment in rural areas.” Their last joint public engagement was in September 2024 in Southport.
