The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, are set to attend the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow today (August 1). Kensington Palace issued a late-night statement confirming the couple — known in Scotland as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay — will take in various sporting events on the second-to-last day of competition.
Meeting Team Wales and SportsAid
During their visit, William and Kate will meet Team Wales competitors and their relatives, including those backed by SportsAid. The Princess of Wales has served as Patron of SportsAid since 2013, and has met many young sportspeople supported by the charity, as well as Olympians and Paralympians who previously received help from the organisation, at training sessions, performance seminars and fundraising occasions.
Team England Futures
Among those greeting the royal couple will be the emerging generation of national contenders being developed through the Team England Futures initiative. The programme offers promising young competitors and ambitious support personnel the chance to experience the Glasgow Games and gain behind-the-scenes insight, equipping them for medal-winning displays as future Team England, Team GB or ParalympicsGB newcomers.
No word on royal children
No information has been released about whether any of their three children will accompany them to the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, so it remains unclear if Prince George or his siblings will be there.
Strong royal presence
The Games have drawn strong royal attendance throughout. The King and Queen attended the Opening Ceremony, making their entrance in Doctor Who's Tardis, while the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal have been seen at numerous sporting contests.
Yesterday, the Duke of Edinburgh made his second visit to the Bowls and Para Bowls after attending last week, accompanied by his wife. The pair sat in the front row of a stand and chatted with some of the many volunteers who help keep the Games running seamlessly.
