Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex, has made a heartfelt public appeal, stating he does not wish to die while still estranged from his daughter. His plea comes in the wake of serious health complications that led to a reported leg amputation following surgery in the Philippines.
An Emotional Appeal for Reconciliation
In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, the 80-year-old retired television lighting director expressed his enduring love and desire for peace. "I've always said I am open to reconciling with my daughter. I have never stopped loving her," Mr Markle stated. He added, "I don't want to die estranged from Meghan. I want to meet my grandkids. It might be nice to meet her husband too."
This public overture follows a significant health crisis. According to reports, Mr Markle underwent a three-hour emergency operation last Wednesday, which resulted in him being admitted to intensive care. It was later reported that his foot turned black, leading to an amputation below the knee.
A Fractured Relationship and a Missed Wedding
The rift between father and daughter dates back seven years to Meghan's wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018. Mr Markle pulled out of attending the ceremony after it was revealed he had collaborated with paparazzi to stage photographs in the lead-up to the event. He subsequently suffered a heart attack. King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales, stepped in to walk Meghan down the aisle at Windsor Castle.
Since then, the relationship has remained broken, with Mr Markle, who now lives in the Philippines, giving numerous interviews critical of the Duchess. He has never met his grandchildren, six-year-old Prince Archie and four-year-old Princess Lilibet. Prince Harry has also never met his father-in-law in person.
Earlier this year, a spokesperson for Meghan confirmed to The Independent that she had "reached out" to her father following news of his surgery, though no further details about the success or nature of that contact were provided. Mr Markle told the newspaper he had not yet received a message from her.
Parallel Royal Estrangements and a Netflix Premiere
The situation echoes other tensions within the Royal Family. Prince Harry remains estranged from his brother, the Prince of Wales, and has had a troubled relationship with his father, the King. The two monarchs did reunite for a private tea at Clarence House in September, ending a 19-month period without face-to-face contact.
Ironically, news of Mr Markle's hospital admission broke on the same day that Meghan's new Netflix Christmas special, "With Love, Meghan," premiered on the streaming platform. The special has received largely negative reviews from critics.
