The Duchess of Sussex's father has issued a heartfelt public appeal to his daughter from a hospital bed in the Philippines, following a life-saving operation that resulted in the amputation of his left leg.
A Desperate Plea for Reconciliation
Thomas Markle Snr, 81, was rushed to hospital earlier this week after falling ill at his home. Surgeons performed a three-hour emergency procedure to remove a dangerous blood clot after his foot reportedly turned "blue and then black". The operation, which saved his life, necessitated the amputation of his leg.
Speaking from his recovery bed, the former lighting director and Emmy award-winner made an emotional plea to mend the fractured relationship with his daughter, which has been estranged since before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. He expressed a deep desire to finally meet his grandchildren, Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4.
Contact Attempt Revealed
The public appeal follows confirmation from Meghan's spokesperson that the Duchess did reach out to her father following news of his health crisis. It was revealed that Meghan contacted him via an email sent to an old address, one reportedly unused for five years. Sources indicate the message was successfully delivered.
Thomas Markle had previously denied any contact from his daughter. When asked about the email by the Daily Mail, he said, "Of course I want to speak to her but I am not sure if these are the right circumstances. I've always said I am open to reconciling with my daughter."
A Father's Hope for the Future
Thomas Markle, who moved to a high-rise flat on the island of Cebu earlier this year, now lives more than 7,000 miles from Meghan and Harry's home in Los Angeles. His words from hospital carried a tone of urgency and longing.
"I have never stopped loving her," he stated. "I don't want to die estranged from Meghan. I want to meet my grandkids. It might be nice to meet her husband too."
As doctors continue to monitor his recovery, the focus for the 81-year-old appears firmly fixed on healing more than just physical wounds, hoping for a last chance at family reconciliation.
