Sir David Attenborough, the beloved naturalist and environmentalist, has celebrated his 100th birthday, receiving an outpouring of congratulations from around the world. His centenary was marked with a special live event at the Royal Albert Hall, featuring music from his programmes and reflections from public figures and leading advocates for the natural world.
In the lead-up to the milestone, Sir David said he was “completely overwhelmed” by the birthday messages, thanking his well-wishers “most sincerely”. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was among those paying tribute, describing him as “a true national treasure” whose work has captivated the nation for decades.
The Royal Albert Hall celebration, broadcast on BBC One and hosted by Kirsty Young, included performances from musicians featured on his BBC Planet Earth series. Dan Smith of Bastille performed “Pompeii”, Sigur Rós played “Hoppipolla”, and the BBC Concert Orchestra performed scores from iconic moments in his programmes.
To mark the occasion, the Natural History Museum’s immersive exhibition, presented by Sir David, was adapted into a free five-minute show at Outernet London. Additionally, the animal charity Peta named a rescued bull “Sir Attenbullock” in his honour.
A special programme, David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth, aired on BBC One and iPlayer on his birthday.
