The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, is facing a second health challenge in less than a year, following a shock diagnosis of malignant melanoma. The news comes just months after the 64-year-old underwent a single mastectomy for breast cancer.

The serious form of skin cancer was discovered after several moles were removed during reconstructive surgery following her breast cancer treatment. One of the moles was identified as cancerous.

A spokesperson for the Duchess confirmed the diagnosis, stating: "Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Her dermatologist asked that several moles were removed and analysed at the same time as the Duchess was undergoing reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy, and one of these has been identified as cancerous."

They emphasised that the Duchess is undergoing further investigations to ensure the disease was caught in its earliest stages. "She is undergoing further investigations to ensure that this has been caught in the early stages. Clearly, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer has been distressing but the Duchess remains in good spirits."

Gratitude Amidst Adversity

The Duchess has expressed immense gratitude towards her medical team, including her dermatologist, whose vigilance led to the early detection. Her spokesperson added, "The Duchess wants to thank the entire medical team which has supported her, particularly her dermatologist whose vigilance ensured the illness was detected when it was."

Despite the distressing news, those close to her say Sarah is determined to face this new battle with characteristic strength. The diagnosis was made public just as she was beginning to recover from her previous operation.

A Call for Vigilance

This second cancer diagnosis serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of regular skin checks. The Duchess's experience highlights how crucial it is to monitor moles and seek professional medical advice for any changes.
