Princess Eugenie has named her third child Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, two weeks after giving birth. The middle name Elizabeth honors her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, continuing a royal tradition of naming daughters after the monarch.
Royal Tradition of Tribute
At her death in 2022, Queen Elizabeth had eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with most girls named after her in some capacity. Princess Anne, the Queen's only daughter, has Elizabeth as a middle name, as do Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice, Lady Louise Windsor, Isla Phillips, Princess Charlotte, Lena Tindall, and Beatrice's daughters Sienna and Athena.
Unique Tributes
Princess Lilibet, daughter of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, was named after the Queen's childhood nickname. A Palace source told the BBC that the Sussexes had not asked permission to use it, but a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan disputed this, saying: "The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement - in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called. During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name."
Eugenie announced the name on Instagram, writing: "We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home. Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers."
