Reports that Meghan Markle could be counting on a royal redemption on par with Queen Camilla have been ridiculed by royal fans. The Duchess of Sussex could be hoping for a public rehabilitation similar to that of Camilla, who was "hated" after Princess Diana's death, according to a royal expert.
Broadcaster Simon Vigar told GB News: "The Camilla transformation is incredible. I remember how hated she and Charles were." He said Charles and Camilla's acceptance by the public at their 2005 wedding, just eight years after Diana's death, was nothing short of "incredible".
Public reaction to the comparison
"Anything is possible," Mr Vigar added. "[But] I can't see the rift with the family, particularly with William and Catherine; it's obviously never going to go back to the way it was, which is terribly said." Commentators took to X to criticise the comparison, labelling it "a joke".
"Presume you're joking!" one person wrote. Another added: "There is no coming back for Meghan Markle." A third said: "Let's not pretend Camilla has been universally 'redeemed' - plenty of people still haven't forgotten the history. They're not remotely comparable."
Acknowledging the differences
Mr Vigar also acknowledged that Meghan and Camilla differed in the number of ties they had severed before any attempt at restoring their reputations. "[Harry and Meghan] have burned a lot of bridges and invaded a lot of other people's privacy along the way," he said. "And that will never be forgiven or forgotten, really."
Backlash over Althorp photo
The comments follow backlash Meghan faced for sharing a photo of her children at Althorp Estate, Princess Diana's childhood home. The duchess posted a snap of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet wandering through the grounds of the estate at the weekend, following speculation that the family would visit Diana's grave while in the UK earlier this month.
Maureen Callahan delivered a scathing verdict on the move in her Daily Mail column, suggesting it showed a lack of understanding about "some things being sacred". Social media users also labelled it "ghoulish exploitation" and accused Meghan of being "disrespectful" and "opportunistic".
