The Princess of Wales will host her annual Together at Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey on Friday, marking a significant milestone in her gradual return to public duties following cancer treatment. The service, attended by 1,600 guests including members of the royal family, will focus on themes of love, kindness, and empathy after what the Prince of Wales described as a 'brutal' year.
A bespoke illustration by British artist Charlie Mackesy, known for his bestselling book 'The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse', will feature on the Order of Service. The snowy scene depicts a group walking arm in arm towards Westminster Abbey, with the words 'How did I help? You were by my side, which was everything.' Mackesy said: 'Love, empathy and kindness are important messages for us all. I hope it reminds us of the beauty of being there for each other at Christmas.'
Each guest will receive a special letter from the princess thanking them for providing comfort and hope, telling them 'Love is the light that can shine bright, even in our darkest times.' Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, and Lindsey Burrow, wife of late rugby star Rob Burrow, will light candles during the service.
Readings will be given by the Prince of Wales and celebrities including actors Richard E Grant, Michelle Dockery, Sophie Okonedo, and Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty. The service, supported by The Royal Foundation, will be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX at 7:30pm on Christmas Eve.
