Queen's Ex-Aide: Andrew's Newsnight Interview Made Skin Crawl

Queen Elizabeth's Former Press Secretary Reveals Disgust at Prince Andrew's BBC Interview

Ailsa Anderson, who served as press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II for over a decade, has publicly expressed that a specific moment from Prince Andrew's notorious 2019 Newsnight interview made her skin crawl. Anderson worked closely with the monarch from 2001 until 2013, even interviewing with the former Duke of York for a position during her tenure.

The Infamous Car-Crash Television Moment

Anderson watched the broadcast interview, conducted by BBC journalist Emily Maitlis, and recalled thinking thank God I'm not there. The interview was arranged following mounting public and media scrutiny over Andrew's friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. During the conversation, Andrew made a series of bizarre claims that have since become infamous.

These included assertions that a medical condition prevented him from sweating and that he could not have met Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre because he was dining at a Pizza Express in Woking at the time. The former prince, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to his association with Epstein, also stated that he ceased contact with the financier in 2006 when investigations began.

However, emails later released by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of the Epstein files appeared to contradict this, suggesting ongoing communication.

A Missed Opportunity for Compassion

Speaking to The Sun's Royal Exclusive, Anderson elaborated on her reaction. She noted that Andrew seemed keen to present his narrative, thinking this is my time to shine. Anderson described certain points in the interview as almost ridiculous, specifically highlighting the line about not sweating as the moment that made her skin crawl.

She emphasized a critical juncture when Maitlis asked if Andrew had anything to add. Anderson observed that this was his massive opportunity to express sympathy for the victims of trafficking and exploitation. Instead, he simply replied, No, I don't think so, a response she found deeply lacking in empathy.

Royal Fallout and Family Dynamics

The interview had significant repercussions for Andrew. He was subsequently stripped of his prince title and military affiliations and was ordered to vacate his 30-room Royal Lodge residence in Windsor. Last week, King Charles's younger brother was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, adding to his legal troubles.

Behind the scenes, Andrew's daughter, Princess Beatrice, reportedly played a role in organizing the Newsnight interview. Described as an unexpected guest during negotiations, the 37-year-old princess was said to have asked sensible questions, according to former producer Sam McAlister, whose memoir inspired the Netflix film Scoop.

Nevertheless, Beatrice was left in tears after the interview aired. A source told the Mail on Sunday that she hosted a birthday dinner for her then-fiancé, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, shortly after the broadcast and was quite tearful at times. The source added that Beatrice has been in tears every day since the interview was televised.

Reliance on Daughter's Judgement

The publication further claimed that both Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, heavily rely on their daughters for guidance. The source explained that Beatrice, in particular, is valued for her mature judgement in public matters, possessing an old head on young shoulders. They noted that the odds were stacked against her in this situation, implying sympathy for her involvement.

Anderson's candid remarks shed light on the internal royal perspectives during one of the most controversial episodes in recent British monarchy history, highlighting the personal and public fallout from Andrew's association with Epstein.
