Veteran psychic Inbaal Honigman has warned that many online tarot card and psychic readings are 'pointless and meaningless', as social media floods with generic content that may not have viewers' best interests at heart.
Inbaal, who has spent two decades practising Tarot, astrology, palmistry, and clairvoyance, says the rise of social media has led to a lack of regulation in broadcasting, contributing to the spread of non-personalised readings. She told us: "The advent of social media, which brought with it a lack of regulation in broadcasting, has contributed to the spread of non-personalised psychic readings, many of which are pointless and meaningless."
Changing image of psychics
Inbaal notes that psychics used to be seen as "ugly, dodgy ladies, sitting in dusty libraries and speaking in metaphors", but the online space has normalised the subject. "Psychics are now seen as relatable, everyday people who have a special gift. A psychic can be your sister, your neighbour, or your colleague," she explained.
She attributes this shift to popular culture, citing fictional shows like The Ghost Whisperer and Medium, as well as real-life programmes such as Long Island Medium and Most Haunted. This has helped bring the mystical into the mainstream, but Inbaal advises caution when engaging with online videos.
Concerns about online clips
While some psychics share genuinely helpful content, Inbaal warns about beginner psychics who are not upfront about their experience, and outright fraudsters who direct viewers to paid services. She also criticises AI-generated videos: "And then we've got the AI videos, computer-generated videos of people who don't actually exist, sharing generic, flat advice. They are of no spiritual value at all."
Inbaal stresses that big life decisions should be made by the individual, not a psychic. "Big important decisions are 100% for the individual to decide, not for a psychic," she said. This applies to other professionals too, as they can only guide and advise.
Why psychic content goes viral
Inbaal believes the prevalence of psychic videos is due to stress from the cost-of-living crisis, internet burnout, and global events like the pandemic and wars. "Let down by leadership, financial institutions and those in positions of power, people now turn to the one direction which can tell them about the future, which is the psychic," she added.
She advises trusting your gut when assessing online psychics, and steering clear of AI-generated content if you are learning the craft.
