Princess Diana Fans Spot Odd Height Detail in Charles Photos

Princess Diana and King Charles were married for 15 years between 1981 and 1996, and while they were frequently photographed together, a peculiar detail in many of those images continues to baffle royal fans. The late Princess of Wales and the current monarch were both exactly 5ft 10in (1.78m) tall, yet in numerous photos, Charles appears several inches taller than Diana.

The Height Illusion in Royal Photographs

When the couple stood side by side, their matching height was undeniable, as confirmed by their official engagement photograph, anniversary images, and family portraits. However, in other images, Diana appears significantly shorter than Charles. Fans have noticed this discrepancy for decades, with many commenting on the curious detail after a social media user shared a collection of pictures showing the monarch looking taller than Diana.

One person wrote: "That's why she always tilted her head down. She also wore flats or very short heels." Another video shared on Facebook by a royal fan showed a collection of photographs of Charles and Diana, including some where the couple were clearly the same height, and other posed photographs where Charles was made to seem taller.

Camera Tricks and Fashion Choices

It turns out camera trickery, positioning, and clothing all played a part in making sure that Diana didn't tower over her then-husband. Princess Diana would frequently opt for flat shoes or those with a very small heel to avoid towering over Charles, and even had to select her wedding shoes with great care to ensure she wasn't too tall. There are also photographs showing them posing in front of steps, where it's believed Charles could be positioned on a step higher than Diana so that he appears taller than her. In others, Diana is sitting down in a chair while Charles stands behind her, which obscures the lack of height difference even further.

The royal fan's video was captioned: "Why did Princess Diana look shorter than Prince Charles even though they were the same height? Diana and Charles were both 178cm tall, but they were often photographed as if Diana were much shorter than Charles."

Explanations from Observers and Academics

The user went on to explain the reason for the posed photos making Charles appear taller was likely due to "old standards" that said men should be taller than women in order to "portray power and status". They added: "These photos were taken in the 1980s, when the royal family still adhered to the old standards. The photographers were trying to portray the power and status of the future king by making him look taller than his wife. Diana, on the other hand, is in a more modest position."

Some observers have suggested His Majesty may have been "standing on a box" in the photographs to create the impression that he was considerably taller than his former wife. According to a piece published on The Society Pages, the royal fan's idea that these images were designed to make Charles look taller than Diana for "status" reasons might not be that far from the truth. Lisa Wade PhD, a professor at Occidental College, suggested: "They were typically arranged so as to suggest that he was significantly taller than her, or at least to disguise the fact that he was not. This effort to make Charles appear taller is a social commitment to the idea that men are taller and women shorter. When our own bodies, and our chosen mates, don't follow this rule, sometimes we'll go to great lengths to preserve the illusion."

Modern Royal Family Breaking the Mold

While this has never been confirmed as the official explanation, it may well account for why King Charles appeared significantly taller than Princess Diana in the majority of their photographs together. The video shared by the royal fan also included some pictures of newer members of the Royal Family, including Charles and Diana's son, Prince William, and his wife, Princess Catherine, who seem to be rebelling against the old ways. While William, who is 6ft 3in, is taller than Catherine, who is 5ft 9in, they have several photos together that make them appear the same height. Photos of themselves with their children will show them both sitting down, so the height difference isn't as obvious, as if they have decided to reject the standards set by generations before them.
