Princess Anne has become the first member of the royal family to carry out official duties since the announcement of King Charles's cancer diagnosis. The Princess Royal presided over an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, just a day after the news was made public.
The King is undergoing regular treatment for an unspecified form of cancer, discovered during a recent hospital stay for a benign prostate condition. He has postponed all public engagements, with other royals expected to take on additional responsibilities. Anne, known for her dedication, had also been scheduled to visit the Midlands on Tuesday, but that event was cancelled.
Among those honoured at the ceremony were conductor Ivor Bolton, tenor Nicky Spence, rugby union referee Sara Cox, and wheelchair rugby league player James Simpson. Anne's reliability has been evident in recent weeks; she stepped in for investitures during the King's prostate treatment and conducted the first international royal tour of 2024 to Sri Lanka in January.
Officials confirm that Charles will continue state business and paperwork, including Privy Council meetings and weekly audiences with the prime minister. The Prince of Wales is also returning to duties this week, following the Princess of Wales's abdominal surgery. William is likely to undertake some engagements on his father's behalf, though Counsellors of State are not expected to be needed.
Prince Harry has cleared his diary to fly to the UK to be with his father, despite their strained relationship. He was seen arriving at LAX and is expected to land in the UK around midday. The King personally informed both Harry and William of his diagnosis before it was publicly announced on Monday evening.
