The Duke of Sussex reportedly wants to pivot away from legal battles, refocus on his British patronages, and lay groundwork for the Invictus Games in Birmingham.
Half-in, half-out warning
The late Queen Elizabeth made the rules clear during the Sandringham Summit in 2020: "You cannot be half in and half out." Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were never granted official working royal status while pursuing private careers, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, gave up her PR career to serve the Crown full-time.
Historical precedent also exists: Edward VIII's attempt to retain a partial royal role in 1936 led to his abdication and exile.
King Charles must stand firm
The opinion piece argues that allowing Harry to establish an official foothold, with high-profile visits while living in California, would undermine the working Royal Family. King Charles's primary duty is to safeguard the Monarchy's integrity, as he did with his brother Andrew.
