Prince Harry once gave Sir Clive Alderton, King Charles's principal private secretary, the nickname 'The Wasp', which has resurfaced after the announcement of Sir Clive's resignation. Sir Clive, who has worked for the Royal Household for 20 years, confirmed to royal staff that he will step down next year around the time he turns 60 in May.
Nickname Revealed in Memoir
In his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry referred to three key staff members by insect names, with 'The Wasp' believed to relate to Sir Clive. Harry wrote: 'The Wasp was link, charming, arrogant, a ball of jazzy energy. He was great at pretending to be polite, even servile.' He described Sir Clive as someone who would 'stammer' and 'put you on his list' before delivering a figurative sting.
Resignation Announcement
Sir Clive said in a message to staff: 'It has been the greatest imaginable honour to serve the King and Queen in my present role through such historic times and with unforgettable humour along the way. That support will continue, in a less formal capacity, for all of my life.' A Buckingham Palace spokesman added: 'The King and Queen are deeply grateful to Sir Clive for his tireless support and wise counsel over the years, and for the enduring loyalty that will ensure a smooth transition to his successor.'
Sir Clive, 59, is well-respected in the royal household, though Prince Harry's nickname suggests a less favourable view. Sir Clive is not believed to have ever responded to Harry's comments.
