The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched legal action against the Mail on Sunday after the newspaper allegedly published a private letter from Meghan Markle without permission. The couple announced the High Court claim in a statement on their official website, with Prince Harry drawing comparisons to the treatment of his late mother, Princess Diana.
Harry said he and Meghan were driven to act by the 'relentless propaganda' from the British tabloid press, which he described as 'bullying' with a 'human cost'. He wrote: 'I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.' The statement expressed fears of history repeating itself.
The legal claim, filed by law firm Schillings, alleges misuse of private information, copyright infringement, and breach of the Data Protection Act. The couple are privately funding the case, and any damages will be donated to an anti-bullying charity. The Mail on Sunday said it 'stands by' its story and will 'defend this case vigorously'.
Harry condemned the press for 'knowingly false and malicious' stories, adding that the couple had been unable to correct 'continual misrepresentations'. He noted that positive coverage of their South Africa tour exposed 'the double standards' of the press pack that had 'vilified her almost daily'.
