Pippa Middleton, the sister of the Princess of Wales, holds a title of her own, despite not being a member of the Royal Family. The 43-year-old, who celebrates her birthday today, has been married to hedge fund manager James Matthews since 2017. The couple share three children: Arthur Michael William Matthews, Grace Elizabeth Jane Matthews and Rose Matthews.
A title from marriage, not the sovereign
Unlike her sister, Pippa’s title was not granted by the sovereign but came through her marriage. James is the eldest son of David Matthews, who is laird – a feudal Scottish title for minor lord – of Glen Affric, a 10,000-acre Scottish estate.
Pippa will acquire the title of Lady Glen Affric when her husband inherits the lairdship. She currently uses the courtesy title of Mrs Matthews of Glen Affric the Younger.
Princess Catherine's many titles
Princess Catherine and her husband, Prince William, have both inherited several titles after King Charles's accession to the throne in 2023, and many of them are less well-known. Some of these titles are regional, so the royal couple uses them only when they are in the area.
They include the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay when they are in Scotland and the Earl and Countess of Chester. They are also known as Lord and Lady of the Isles when they visit the Inner Hebrides.
The couple were made the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Earl and Countess of Strathearn and Baron and Lady Carrickfergus when they married in 2011, and retain these titles.
