King Harald V of Norway has been discharged from a hospital in Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands, following treatment for a skin infection, the royal palace confirmed on Thursday.
The 89-year-old monarch, who celebrated his birthday last weekend, was admitted on Tuesday. His personal doctor, Bjørn Bendz, travelled to Tenerife on Wednesday and has stated that the king suffered from a skin infection on one of his legs.
The palace reported that Harald responded well to treatment and recovered quickly. He and Queen Sonja will continue their private vacation, with no date yet set for their return to Norway. Dr Bendz will remain on the island for a few days to monitor the king's condition.
This incident comes two years after Harald fell ill in Malaysia and required a temporary pacemaker before being fitted with a permanent one in Norway. The king has reigned since 1991.
His hospitalisation occurs amid a turbulent period for the Norwegian royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit faces renewed scrutiny over her contacts with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while her son from a previous relationship is on trial in Oslo for multiple alleged offences, including charges of rape.
