Good Morning Britain star Narinder Kaur has sparked a furious backlash after commenting on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's first joint appearance since returning to the UK. The broadcaster, known for her appearances on Good Morning Britain and Jeremy Vine, praised the "wonderful" scenes in Nottingham on Thursday (October 16), where the non-working royals were greeted by crowds ahead of visiting three charitable engagements in the city.
Kaur's post draws criticism
"The crowds have turned up for the world's favourite Royals - 'we love you Harry and Meghan' they scream," Narinder wrote on X, alongside a video of Harry and Meghan interacting with members of the public. "How wonderful is this to see? God we needed them in the Royal Family as working royals - they're popularity is clear to see.. What a huge mistake we let them go."
The last sentence in Narinder's post caught the attention of social media users, with many pointing out that it was Harry and Meghan's decision to step down as working royals. The pair made the decision in 2020 and relocated to Montecito in California. Shortly after they returned to the UK at the end of August, a letter on behalf of King Charles confirmed that their role within the Royal Family had not changed, and they would remain non-working royals.
Social media users respond
"They ran away from being working Royals... now it's just a gaslighting performance act," one commented, leading Narinder to hit back: "I'd say they were 'chased' out."
"Nobody 'let them go'. They chose to leave and become private citizens," a second added. Another fumed: "Who let them go? They took a freedom flight.. remember? Why is it wonderful to see a crazy couple pretending they are doing something? They left. They hated on the RF, wrote a book. Still hate them. They have no job, they are me me me. Good lord what a ridiculous post."
A fourth agreed: "Oh Narinder, come on We didn't let them go, they chose to leave! Remember Oprah, Netflix and Spare? They spent years telling us how dreadful royal life was. Why on earth would you want them back in an institution they painted as so unbearable?"
Support for Sussexes
A fifth echoed: "They stepped away from Royal duties but behave like this as if it's a Royal walkabout. They complain about having Royal protection but walk about like this where anyone could take a pop at them. It's the hypocrisy that people hate about them."
Others voiced their support of Harry and Meghan, with one writing: "We didn’t let them go, they chose to leave, however it’s lovely to see the reception they received. Hope it works out well for all the RF." Another said: "I completely agree with everything... except that they have to go back to working for the RF! The RF doesn't deserve to benefit from this couple's star power after how badly they treated them—especially Meghan! And as we’ve already seen, the Sussexes don’t need the monarchy!"
