Meghan's apology to William and Kate: too little, too late?

Meghan Markle is reportedly preparing to apologise to Prince William and Princess Kate for past remarks about the Royal Family, a move that has been met with scepticism over its timing and sincerity. The apology, first revealed by the Express, comes more than five years after the Sussexes stepped back from royal duties and made a series of public accusations.

A delayed gesture

Since Prince Harry and Meghan left the UK in 2020, they have capitalised on their royal connections through a £100m Netflix deal and numerous tell-all interviews. Among the most damaging claims was Meghan's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which she said there were "conversations and concerns" at the Palace about how dark her unborn son Archie's skin might be. Harry added: "That conversation, I am never going to share. At the time it was awkward, I was a bit shocked." Neither named the speaker, casting suspicion over the entire family, though Harry later described the remark as "unconscious bias" rather than intentional racism.

Meghan also criticised Kate in the same interview, saying: "A few days before the wedding [Kate] was upset about the flower girl dresses and it made me cry," before adding: "I'm not sharing that piece about Kate to be disparaging about her."

Questionable motives

The apology, if made public, could put pressure on William and Kate to respond, potentially making them appear unwilling to mend fences. It would also allow Meghan to tell mutual acquaintances that she has tried to apologise, even if the gesture is rejected. However, critics argue that if Meghan were genuinely sorry, she would not have waited five years to say so. The timing, coming as the Sussexes re-enter UK social circles, suggests commercial and social benefits may be behind the move.
