Meghan Markle has taken a swipe at royal life, describing the requirement to wear nude tights as a 'silly' custom that made her feel 'inauthentic'. The Duchess of Sussex made the remarks during an appearance on The Circuit podcast to promote the second series of her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan.
Speaking to host Emily Chang, Meghan recalled her time as a working member of the royal family, saying she 'couldn't be as vocal' and had to adhere to restrictive clothing rules. 'I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time,' she said. 'I hadn't seen pantyhose since movies in the 80s when they came in the little egg. That felt a little bit inauthentic. And that's a silly example, but right now I don't feel I need to prove anything.'
Meghan's comments come after she was seen wearing nude tights at her first post-wedding appearance at a Buckingham Palace garden party in 2018, which sparked debate over whether female royals follow an unspoken protocol. She has previously spoken about her fashion choices being stifled, revealing in the 2022 documentary series Harry & Meghan that she wore muted tones to avoid clashing with senior royals like Kate Middleton and the late Queen Elizabeth.
'Most of the time that I was in the UK, I rarely wore colour. There was thought in that,' Meghan said in the documentary. 'I wore a lot of muted tones, but it was also so I could just blend in. I'm not trying to stand out here.'
