Meghan Markle should have listened to her mother - ignoring her is a disaster

Meghan Markle has brushed aside her mother Doria Ragland's stark warnings about returning to the UK, a decision that former royal aide Rob Shuter says could spell disaster for the couple and Prince Harry in particular.

According to Shuter, 70-year-old Ms Ragland, an ex-social worker who speaks to her daughter via FaceTime almost daily, broke her silence when the couple revealed plans to move back to Britain so Archie and Lilibet could attend school there. The mother's concerns were rooted in the intense scrutiny and hostility the Sussexes have faced in the UK.

Doria's warnings fell on deaf ears

Ms Ragland was present throughout the royal wedding, Archie's birth, and the explosive drama that followed, including Meghan's 2021 Oprah interview where she alleged she was left in a "very dark place". Despite the public's divided opinion on those claims, Ms Ragland saw the writing on the wall, warning that returning to Britain meant walking into heightened public hostility and rejection.

For Harry, his wife's refusal to heed her mother's counsel is a catastrophe. He had previously declared at the High Court in London that media coverage had made his wife's life an "absolute misery", and in May 2025 he insisted: "I can't see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point." Yet the couple have now made a complete U-turn, marching back into the spotlight they swore to avoid.

Professional reputations in tatters

The couple return to the UK with their professional reputations damaged. WME CEO Ari Emanuel has said he doesn't "have to think about" Meghan's career anymore, having passed her off to subordinates over a year ago. Their $100 million Netflix contract was downgraded after her lifestyle show With Love, Meghan was axed after two seasons, and her online brand As Ever - selling £15 leather bookmarks and £112 chocolate advent calendars - is struggling without major backing.

Ms Ragland chose to mark her 70th birthday pulling weeds alone in her LA garden rather than rejoin the Sussex side-show. Meghan may jet back to LA later this month for a Daytime Emmy for her cancelled show, but as the article notes, shiny trophies won't save a failing brand. The mother's warnings were grounded in plain common sense, and by ignoring them, Meghan has walked back into the fire - but it is Harry who is about to get burned all over again.
