Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are planning to issue an apology to the royal family over comments they made to Oprah Winfrey during their 2021 TV interview, Express.co.uk can reveal.
Following their exit as senior royals and move to the US, Meghan, 45, claimed that there had been “concerns and conversations” from a royal family member about how dark their son Archie’s skin would be before he was born. The comment sparked a feud within the family after Meghan and Harry, 42, refused to reveal which royal had said it, forcing Prince William to issue a public denial to reporters.
Couple want to ‘eat humble pie’
The couple now want to apologise to his family for Meghan’s claims and the hurt they caused, a source told Express.co.uk.
“Harry and Meghan have always known since they decided to return to the UK that they would need to eat humble pie. Their one big regret about leaving the royal family for the US was their interview with Oprah, and Meghan knows her biggest mistake was her claim that a royal family member had discussed Archie’s skin colour,” the source said.
“Harry was angry with his family at the time, and backed Meghan up, but they now realise what a low blow it was. They both know they’re hot-headed and realise they took things too far, and they should have kept quiet.
“They want to focus on the future, and are hoping that will include a reconciliation at some point. They really want a sit-down so they can address what they said, and Meghan will apologise.”
Hopes for reconciliation
The source added that the couple are “feeling optimistic about being back in the UK” and are hopeful their children will eventually connect with their cousins, George, Charlotte and Louis, and become friends.
While Harry and Meghan visited King Charles at Highgrove earlier this year so he could meet their children, Archie and Lilibet, Harry and William are thought to have not spoken since 2022.
The brothers have been seen together at several family occasions, including King Charles’s coronation in 2023 and the funeral of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, in 2024, but are said not to have acknowledged each other.
No TV interview planned
It was originally thought that Meghan and Harry were considering a public apology on TV, but a representative has confirmed there will be no TV interview and that they will not comment further on private family matters.
The insider also revealed that Meghan and Harry are keeping cameras away as they settle into life in the Cotswolds and have no intention of filming their movements in the UK.
“Meghan is making a real effort to lay low and integrate herself with the locals. Their priority is making sure they stay out of the spotlight, and they don’t want any cameras ruining any chance of smoothing things over with his family,” the source said.
