The Duchess of Sussex has been given a new trending moniker on social media by fans after the latest reports about their status in the UK.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to the UK last month, six years after leaving the country for a new, financially independent life away from their royal duties. Harry and Meghan's return sparked debate as to whether they will remain non-working royals.
A few days after their arrival, Buckingham Palace issued a letter – the first official public clarification – to Government officials and the military regarding the couple's official status as non-working royals. The letter was issued by Buckingham Palace's most senior officer, the lord chamberlain, Richard Benyon.
Letter's key phrase
A part of it read: "In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests."
The Sussexes' spokesperson said they "were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance," however, royal sources argued the couple were notified before the announcement was made public.
Now, royal fans have created a new hashtag on X, #PrivateCitizenMeghanMarkle, and taken aim at the duchess.

Lifestyle brand advice
It comes as Meghan's lifestyle brand has shared her top hosting tips, which include having "as much prepped as possible before guests arrive". Meghan, who relocated to the UK at the end of August, also advises saving one "simple task for the end".
In an Instagram post labelled "Meghan's Hosting Notes", her As Ever firm suggested it should be: "Something you can finish in the kitchen while everyone settles in."
It added: "A little preparation goes a long way toward making hosting feel effortless." The advice was accompanied by a picture of Meghan tying a white apron around her waist.
The duchess' Netflix series With Love, Meghan, which offered recommendations for hosting, cooking and crafting, was panned by critics when it was launched alongside As Ever, which sells jam and flower sprinkles, in 2025.
Meghan welcomed her close friend Kelly McKee Zajfen to the UK earlier this month, and Ms McKee Zajfen posted that the duchess has been given a "loving" reception on her return, which has been "beautiful to witness".
