BBC viewers criticised the latest episode of The One Show after an awkward interview with Oscar winner Mikey Madison and her co-star Jeremy Allen White.
Alex Jones and Roman Kemp hosted the September 28 episode, welcoming pop singer Will Young alongside the stars of Aaron Sorkin's upcoming film, The Social Reckoning. Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White were the first guests to discuss their roles in the film, which is based on real events.
Awkward moments on the green sofa
Viewers at home picked up on an awkwardness to the chat. At one point, Roman's question about whether Mikey's character, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, could be considered an underdog was rebuffed by the star.
Later, Mikey could be seen looking around the room and down at her hands while her co-star answered questions. In a slip-up, host Alex referred to the award-winner by the wrong name entirely, calling her Madison.
Name mix-up and viewer reaction
Alex quickly corrected herself, but only as the star had already started to answer. The slip-up did not go unnoticed by her interviewee, who responded: "That's ok, at least you didn't call me Mickey," before lamenting that she was frequently called by the wrong name.
The lack of rapport between the interviewees and BBC hosts was picked up on by viewers. "Wow...these two are hard work! #TheOneShow," one remarked.
"Why are these guests acting so bored/half asleep. Do they not want to promote their show?" asked a second. Another theorised: "They both seem a little nervous."
A fourth BBC viewer vented: "American actors are SO boring!" A fifth penned: "They looked like they wanted to be ANYWHERE else! Either that or they'd had a row before the show. Felt very uncomfortable."
Another agreed, observing: "There was an awkward Alan Partridge vibe to the interview." Yet another BBC fan commented: "Such hard work...look like they were a couple and had a big fall out before a dinner with friends!"
