The rift between Meghan and her father dates back to 2018, just before her wedding to Prince Harry. Thomas Markle was caught staging paparazzi photographs, a scandal that led him to pull out of walking his daughter down the aisle. He subsequently suffered a heart attack. The then-Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, stepped in to escort Meghan during the ceremony at St George's Chapel.
Since that very public fallout, the relationship has remained broken. Thomas Markle has never met his two grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. He has repeatedly given interviews to the media, at times criticising his daughter, while also expressing a desire for reconciliation. Thomas Markle, who relocated from Mexico to the Philippines, is reported to have had his leg amputated following surgery. His son, Thomas Markle Jr., had appealed to Meghan for compassion before the contact was confirmed, telling the Daily Mail his father was "literally fighting for his life."
A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex provided a brief but significant statement: "I can confirm she has reached out to her father." Sources indicate this contact is a very recent development. No further details have been released, leaving it unclear whether the attempt to communicate was successful or what the nature of the exchange was.

This is not the first time Meghan has reportedly tried to bridge the gap with her father. Previous attempts at communication have been overshadowed by the very public nature of their estrangement. The situation was further complicated by a major legal case.
Meghan previously won a High Court privacy and copyright claim against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). The case centred on articles that published extracts from a heartfelt, handwritten letter she sent to Thomas Markle in an attempt to persuade him to stop speaking to the press.
