Meghan Markle attended the opening ceremony of Prince Harry's Invictus Games in Toronto on Saturday, marking one of their first public appearances together. The actress, who lives in the city, was seated in the stands, separate from the prince, as athletes from 17 countries paraded into the Air Canada Centre.
Prince Harry, 33, launched the Games with a speech reflecting on his military service. He recounted a harrowing flight in 2008 when he saw the coffin of a Danish soldier and three British soldiers with severe injuries. 'The way I viewed service and sacrifice changed forever,' he said, adding that he felt compelled to use his platform to honour those who serve.
Ms Markle, 36, recently spoke publicly about her relationship with the prince, telling Vanity Fair: 'We're two people who are really happy and in love.' She was seen clapping and smiling as competitors entered the stadium.
The prince sat in a separate VIP area next to US First Lady Melania Trump and near Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mrs Trump praised the 'wonderful spirit and determination' of the athletes and said she was 'honoured to lead the US delegation'.
The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, feature 12 sports over eight days for wounded, injured, or sick service personnel. The UK team trained at the University of Bath after selection trials in April. The Games will be hosted by Sydney, Australia, in 2018.
