King Charles has demonstrated forgiveness by welcoming Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children into his private Highgrove home, despite years of public criticism from the couple. According to royal reporter Jasmine Carey, this act of reconciliation offers a key lesson for Meghan: she should now seek to mend her own fractured relationship with her father, Thomas Markle.
The Rift and the King's Response
Since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020, they have launched multiple critiques against the monarchy, including the Oprah Winfrey interview, a Netflix documentary, and Harry's memoir. These attacks caused significant strain, with Prince William even publicly denying accusations of racism. Despite this, King Charles chose to forgive, hosting the family at his cherished Highgrove estate earlier this year.
Carey writes: "King Charles has done the right thing – Meghan could learn from him." The monarch's decision to prioritize family bonds over past grievances, especially for the sake of his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, sets an example of grace under pressure.
Meghan's Opportunity to Reconcile
Carey argues that Meghan now has a clear model for forgiveness. Having been forgiven by the King, she should extend the same olive branch to Thomas Markle, with whom she has been estranged since 2018. The rift began when Thomas staged paparazzi photographs before the royal wedding, leading Meghan to cut ties.
"She can learn from the King that yes, family can let you down and disappoint you, but some things can be fixed," Carey notes. Thomas has repeatedly expressed a desire to meet his daughter and grandchildren. If both sides are willing, a reconciliation could benefit the family, especially the children.
A Call to Action
Carey concludes that Meghan should "pick up the phone and begin trying to mend the relationship." While not all family rifts are repairable, the King's example shows that forgiveness can rebuild bridges. "King Charles seems to have given Meghan another chance – so I think it’s time she watched and learned, and followed in his footsteps," she writes.
