Kate and Pippa's brutal nickname revealed by royal author

Princess Catherine and her sister Pippa Middleton were previously given a brutal joint nickname: the "Wisteria Sisters," according to royal author Simon Vigar.

Speaking on the latest episode of Talking Royals, Vigar revealed that the press used the nickname for the sisters, referencing how fast they could climb their social circle.

Nickname Details

Pippa, who married James Matthews in 2017, is Catherine's younger sister by two years. She attracted media attention after appearing at her sister's 2011 wedding to Prince William.

As well as the press's nickname of "Waity Katie," Catherine was also given the nickname with her sister. "Nasty stuff" was also said about their mother due to her former career as a flight attendant.

Class Commentary

Vigar said: "The British were obsessed with class, we've forgotten what a huge change this is for a middle class girl from Berkshire to now be in that position what wasn't thinkable when Charles and Diana got married."

Host Charlene White added: "The press wasn't exactly lovely [to her]," to which Vigar added: "Waity Katie, Wisteria Sisters, yeah, social climbs..."

Background

Catherine and Pippa grew up alongside their younger brother, James. Catherine's family lived in Jordan for around two and a half years during her early childhood before returning to Berkshire.

She later met William at the University of St Andrews in the early 2000s. The couple got engaged in late 2010 and married in April 2011.
