The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to return to Britain within the next month, but their stay may be brief, according to a source who spoke to The Sunday Times.
Harry and Meghan have already secured a non-royal residence outside London and enrolled their children in schools. However, the prospect of being tied to one country could prove too much for the "international couple," the source said.
Uncertain length of stay
"It'll be an extended period of time - it could be six months, it could be a year, it could be more - I don't even think they know yet," the source added. "They might suddenly go: 'Why don't we try Canada for a while? Why don't we try Australia?'"
Social media commentators ridiculed the idea of the couple returning to Britain with such fanfare just to leave again. One wrote: "Can't they go straight to Canada and avoid us please?" Another said: "Don't bother. We don't want you here." A third added: "The UK public should be outraged and flat out reject this."
Recent revelations
The potentially brief nature of the duke and duchess's stint back in Britain is the latest revelation since news broke of their plans last week. King Charles was reportedly only told three days before the decision became public on Wednesday, despite reuniting with Harry, Meghan and their children in July.
Rumours have also circulated about where the family will settle, with suggestions including rural locations in the Cotswolds. While the King is said to be happy to spend more time with his grandchildren, he remains adamant they will not be working royals, and there is no half-in, half-out option.
Homes retained abroad
Harry and Meghan are expected to keep their homes in Montecito, California, and Portugal, a move royal commentators have suggested could indicate they are just testing the waters.
