Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly trying to prove they are “just like us” with new videos on the duchess’ Instagram this week, an expert has claimed.
Birthday celebrations at Montecito
On Tuesday, Meghan Markle celebrated her 45th birthday at her Montecito home. As well as sharing a photograph of herself jumping into a pool holding birthday balloons, Meghan also uploaded videos on her Instagram story. One of these videos showed the duchess dancing in the kitchen, with Harry heard laughing in the background. A second video was filmed by Meghan and shows the couple trying to put birthday hats on their two dogs, with both Meghan and Harry heard laughing.
While these light-hearted videos weren’t enjoyed by everyone, with many criticising them online, one body language expert has said that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were clearly trying to prove one thing with their video: that they are “just like us” behind closed doors.
Expert analysis
Speaking to Betfair Casino, body language expert Darren Stanton said: “I think what they're doing is really humanising the way they're perceived. They're showing themselves messing around in the kitchen, playing with the dogs, Meghan falling about laughing, dancing, and even walking around barefoot.
“They're sharing moments that you would never, ever have seen from other members of the Royal Family, especially in the past. You do wonder what Queen Elizabeth would have made of it all – that would have been quite interesting.”
He continued: “I think the reason they're posting these kinds of stories is to reconnect with people. This is their way of showing they are just like us.
“They're a couple in love who can be playful, have fun and not take themselves too seriously.
“Ultimately, these posts are giving people an insight into what they're like together behind the scenes. They're showing that royals don’t have to be serious all the time and that they have a fun, light-hearted side to their personalities.”
A quiet day at home
It is believed that Meghan spent a chill day at home on her 45th birthday. She is likely to have spent the day with her husband Prince Harry and their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five. It is also likely that Meghan would have seen her mother, Doria Ragland, at some point during her birthday celebrations.
