Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly on a “collision course” with the Palace after sources claimed they have no intention of being “private citizens”. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to the UK last month, six years after leaving the country for a new, financially independent life away from their royal duties.
Harry and Meghan’s return sparked debate as to whether they will remain non-working royals. A few days after their arrival, Buckingham Palace issued a letter – the first official public clarification – to Government officials and the military regarding the couple’s official status as non-working royals. The letter was issued by Buckingham Palace’s most senior officer, the lord chamberlain, Richard Benyon.
Palace letter clarifies status
A part of the letter read: “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
The Sussexes’ spokesperson said they “were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance,” however, royal sources argued the couple were notified before the announcement was made public.
Source reveals couple’s plans
Now, a source close to them has made new claims about their plans in Britain. They told Woman & Home magazine that the couple have “no intention” of “fading into obscurity”.
They said: “It is their [Harry and Meghan's] belief that they have a great deal to offer charities and good causes that could benefit from their support.
“If the King thought that issuing the letter would simply make them fade away, he would be deeply disappointed.”
The source added: “There is no way, for example, that Harry will turn his back on the WellChild charity or walk away from his Invictus Games initiative.
“It is no exaggeration that this is likely to put them on a collision course with the Palace”.
