Harry and Meghan 'need royal gold dust' to stay relevant

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle need some “royal gold dust” to stay relevant in the UK, a royal commentator has said. This week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – who relocated back to Britain with their children in August – stepped out for their first official joint public engagement since their return.

The couple headed to Nottingham, where they visited various charities. This work is not on behalf of the Royal Family, as they are not working royals, but instead work as private citizens.

Commentator calls trip 'almost sad to see'

While the Nottingham trip seemed to go well, with the couple even doing a royal-looking walkabout to meet the public, one royal commentator has said it was “almost sad to see”. This is because it reminded many of the royal life the couple once had, which they “tossed aside”, according to royal author Ingrid Seward.

Writing in The Sun, Seward said: “It was almost sad to see the once-burnished couple trying so hard to reignite the position that was Harry’s by birthright and Meghan’s by marriage — a position they tossed aside and traded for the allure of American celebrity and cash. Now, they have swapped the azure skies of California for the streets of Nottingham and a curious crowd of onlookers.”

Questions over the couple's aims

“What, some might ask, are they trying to achieve? Cynics might suggest that by cosying up to Charles and Camilla, they hope to regain the favour they once enjoyed. Or is it something more?”

“I think not. Harry is famously impulsive and wears his heart on his sleeve. Still, it is undeniable that Harry and Meghan need some royal gold dust to rub off on them if they are to remain relevant.”
