Harry and Meghan could quit UK over 'messy' return, expert says

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may still reverse their decision and head back to the United States for one "messy" reason, according to a royal expert. The Sussexes made their surprising return to the UK just over a month ago, mere days after revealing their intention to come back.

It is understood the former working royals are residing somewhere in the Cotswolds with their children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. However, their period back on British soil has been fraught with difficulties.

Security fears and a reprimand

Harry and Meghan removed their children from their school immediately after enrolling them due to security fears. They also received a reprimand from King Charles following his issuance of an official letter confirming their status as non-working royals.

Speculation suggests that the pair might even head back to the United States should Harry and Meghan fail in their bid to restore their state-funded security. Now they are full-time residents in the UK, the couple have been granted a review by Ravec, which oversees tax-funded security for royalty and public figures.

Expert: 'Their arrangements are a mess'

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams is not discounting the possibility of the couple returning to the United States - and there is one reason behind that uncertainty, reports the Express.

He told Reach PLC: "They're not planning things well, their arrangements are a mess. They could return to the US because anything is possible with them."

"The school had to be changed. They are significant figures, anything could happen. These are the things you need to plan for."

Possible reasons for the return

Richard then turned his attention to the reasons why Harry and Meghan had returned to the UK more than six years after their departure. The couple had previously claimed they wished to escape the intense scrutiny of the British public eye, so what has prompted this change of heart?

A number of theories have been put forward regarding their sudden return, several of which Richard highlighted as possible explanations. These include the forthcoming 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death, the Invictus Games (which are due to take place in Birmingham next year) and the most widely cited reason - that they wish to have their children educated in the UK.

Some commentators have even suggested that another motivation for relocating back to Britain could be to apply pressure on the government to restore their state-funded security arrangements.

Invictus Games and the Royal Family

The royal expert noted that, while few people officially know why Harry and Meghan have returned, he is confident the Duke of Sussex would be desperately keen for his father, King Charles, to attend next year's Invictus Games.

He said: "No one knows officially why they've come back. The 30th anniversary of Diana's death is coming up. The children getting a British education, Meghan showing her thespian ability."

"There's also the Invictus Games, I'm sure Harry wants the King there. I'm sure he wants the King there in person."

Richard believes there will be "some compromise" reached over the security matter, though whether this will prove sufficient to satisfy Harry "remains to be seen". What he is confident about is that their sudden return to the UK will have left the Royal Family "on the back foot".

He believes they "surely preferred it when they were on the other side of the world".

He went on to say: "They can now come and go as they please. When they're in situ, they can do as they like. They're members of the Royal Family without being working royals - something like the half in, half out deal they want."

"The Royal Family are on the back foot, they didn't know they were coming over. The Royal Family surely preferred it when they were on the other side of the world. Harry wouldn't have dreamed of bringing his family over but now they want to live in the UK again?"
