Earl Spencer warned his nephew Prince Harry about the speed of his relationship with Meghan Markle during its early stages, according to royal author Tom Bower.
In the book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, Bower writes: "Three times married, Spencer cautioned his nephew to reconsider his haste towards marriage." He added: "His advice provoked a bitter reaction."
Family Reservations
According to Bower, Harry's uncle and aunts, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, had reservations about his romance with Meghan. Despite Harry believing Diana and Meghan shared similarities and being convinced his late mother's family would welcome Meghan with open arms, Bower claims "he was disappointed."
Bower noted that Diana's relatives and friends did not agree with Harry's comparison and were concerned about Meghan fitting into the Royal Family, as reported by YT News.
Earl Spencer's Memoir
The claims come amid headlines generated by Earl Spencer's new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, in which he makes a series of claims against the Firm, particularly the King. One of the most shocking is that Charles allegedly told the Earl "we'll forget her [Diana] soon enough" during a phone call following Princess Diana's death.
Diana's funeral was held on September 6, 1997, six days after her death. Her brother also addressed his opposition to William and Harry walking behind their mother's coffin.
Uncle on Neither Side
The Earl has also broken his silence on the rift between William and Harry, saying he has taken neither side. In an interview with the BBC ahead of the release of his book, he said: "I think there is a perception in the media that I am on Harry's side. Well, I'm on my deceased sister's sons' side, both of them. And if either of them wanted anything, then I'd be equally there for them. And I never get involved in one camp or the other, except as a benign figure, I hope."
Speaking about the fact his nephews do not speak, he said: "I hope one day it's resolved. But I don't know all. I certainly don't know what's been done in the finer detail and so I would feel intrusive if I got more involved than to say of course a mother would want her two sons to be happy together and love each other."
