Prince Joachim of Denmark has permitted a film crew into his private family home for the first time, allowing cameras to capture a romantic date at Schackenborg Castle for a reality television series. The property in Møgeltønder featured in an episode of the TV2 programme Farmer Looking for Love.
A post on the castle's official Instagram account revealed that the filming took place on Constitution Day, with TV2 having identified the historical setting as 'the perfect place for a romantic date'. The castle, which dates back to the 1660s, belonged to the von Schack family for eleven generations before reverting to the Danish royal family in 1978.
Prince Joachim has lived at Schackenborg since 1993, initially with his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, and their two sons, Count Nikolai and Count Felix. He married his second wife, Princess Marie, in 2008, with the wedding held at nearby Møgeltønder Church. The couple now holiday at the castle with their children, Count Henrik and Countess Athena.
The family has been the subject of controversy in recent years after Queen Margrethe stripped her grandchildren of their princely titles, leaving them as Counts and a Countess of Monpezat. Prince Joachim publicly expressed his sadness at the decision, telling B.T. that his children were 'sad' and did not know 'which leg to stand on'. Royal commentator Brittani Barger noted 'clear bitterness' over the loss of their Highness styles and royal titles.
