Composer's Verdict: Kate and Charlotte's Piano Duet Was 'Perfect'
Composer praises Kate and Charlotte's 'perfect' piano duet

The composer behind the piece of music performed by the Princess of Wales and her daughter has shared his glowing review of their heartwarming piano duet. Scottish musician Erland Cooper expressed his delight after hearing Princess Kate and ten-year-old Princess Charlotte play his composition, Holm Sound, at a pre-recorded festive event.

A Surprise Royal Performance

Erland Cooper described it as "such a surprise" and an honour to be invited to Windsor Castle to witness the royal performance. The piece was featured during Kate's annual Together at Christmas carol service, which was recorded in early December and broadcast on Christmas Eve. Cooper revealed he had previously spoken with the Princess about the music, knowing she enjoyed playing it with her family, but had no idea it would lead to this public performance.

"I didn't need to give any direction, they were so good," Cooper told BBC Breakfast. He acknowledged the potential nerves of performing for a film crew and the composer himself, but said the pair played the piece several times flawlessly. "They asked me to have a wee go as well and I gave a few pointers. But I didn't need to. I think I was there as a cheerleader," he added.

Confidence and Poignancy in the Performance

The composer was particularly impressed with the young Princess Charlotte, whom he called "very confident." He praised her skill, stating simply, "She plays it so beautifully." The performance held extra emotional weight, as Cooper explained the music was originally written for his own mother, who is also named Charlotte. The theme of the piece revolves around motherhood and the cyclical nature of family.

"It's about how we see our parents in our children's eyes," Cooper said, highlighting the poignant coincidence. "It's about that sort of full circle moment and it's about motherhood." This layer of meaning undoubtedly resonated with the mother-daughter duo during their performance at Westminster Abbey.

A Festive Tradition and Public Reaction

The fifth annual Together at Christmas service, a staple in the royal calendar, celebrates community heroes. As footage of the duet aired, Princess Kate read a personal letter emphasising the power of small, gentle acts of care and love during the festive season. This marked the second time Kate has showcased her piano skills during the concert, having previously accompanied singer Tom Walker in 2021.

The inclusion of Princess Charlotte thrilled royal observers, with many taking to social media to express their joy at seeing the young royal's musical talents. The event successfully blended family moment with public duty, creating a memorable highlight of the royal family's festive engagements.
