A childcare worker has revealed how she accidentally exposed the true origin of a baby's name, leading to the child's parents separating. The worker, who shared her story on Reddit, said she told a mother that her daughter's name, Vriska, came from the webcomic Homestuck, and the revelation prompted the mother to leave her husband.
Name origin revealed during small talk
The childcare worker explained that she often talks to parents about shared interests to build rapport. When she met the mother of a newly enrolled baby named Vriska, she mentioned that she also loved Homestuck, assuming it would be a quick way to connect. The mother, however, looked confused and asked what Homestuck was.
The worker told her it was a comic and that one of the characters was called Vriska, but sensing the awkward atmosphere, she quickly said, "Oh nevermind! It's probably a coincidence, don't mind me, haha!" She added that she was confused because she believed the name Vriska did not exist before Homestuck.
Husband's fabricated research exposed
The mother then explained that Vriska was a "cute, original name" her husband had come up with, inspired by the word "Vrishchika", which is Hindi for Scorpio. The worker said the husband had gone so far as to create a fake paper trail of his research, showing his wife books and websites about the word Vrishchika so she would believe him without looking into it.
The mother, who is interested in crystals and astrology, had been gushing about how thoughtful her husband was, since he was not into her beliefs and considered them stupid. The worker said she was "internally losing my mind" while nodding along politely.
Mother leaves husband after discovering truth
Shortly after, the mother pulled her daughter out of daycare and moved in with her parents. She personally thanked the childcare worker for telling her the truth, explaining that she had googled Vriska and got her now ex to confess the whole story.
The husband admitted that he really loved the character Vriska, and that this love was of the "waifu" kind — a term used to describe a fictional female character someone feels romantic or sexual attraction towards — rather than simply relating to the character. The mother was furious and decided to leave her husband for lying to her, among other things.
The childcare worker said she is "guilt ridden" about directly shattering a marriage and worried about the impact on baby Vriska. She questioned whether she was the a***hole, noting she doesn't know the whole story and that the husband might be a good father, but also reasoned that a husband who sounds "manipulative and insane" might not be worth keeping.
