Earl Spencer is reportedly planning his next career move, one that mirrors a venture by Meghan Markle. According to reports, Princess Diana's brother has trademarked the name Spencer Farms to use for goods, in a similar way to how the Duchess of Sussex has done for her own brand, As Ever.
The Sun reported that the earl wants to use his business at Althorp for various products like honey, tea, marmalade and wine. A source told the outlet: “First Spencer imitated Prince Harry with attacks on the royal family, and now he is doing a Meghan — and appears to be planning to make jam.”
Trademark filings revealed
The newspaper claimed it has seen Intellectual Property Office filings showing how the earl has registered his name for public speaking, appearances and voice-over services.
The move comes just a few days after he published his controversial book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which contains explosive claims about the King.
Claims in the new memoir
In his new book, Charles Spencer claims that the King, then the Prince of Wales, said about Diana, “we’ll forget her soon enough” during an argument over whether the then Princes William and Harry should walk behind their mother’s coffin in her funeral procession.
The memoir also alleges the King “sounded giddily elated – like a lottery winner” when he spoke to the earl after Diana’s death.
Earl's duty to write
The earl last week told the BBC he felt it was his “duty… as an eyewitness to history” to write a new memoir chronicling the life of his sister.
He said: “I’m aware of mortality and I wanted to just put things down once and for all that were true. This is not a threat, it’s a fact, I know lots of things about the King which I chose not to include in the book because they were not relevant.”
