Thousands of runners will depart from Newcastle Quayside and follow the iconic route through Gateshead, culminating in Blaydon. Road closures for the 5.9-mile course have been confirmed, affecting parts of Newcastle city centre, bridges, and areas of Gateshead, as previously reported.
History of the Blaydon Race
The original Blaydon Races, immortalised in Geordie Ridley's folk song, were horse races dating back to 1811, accompanied by lively celebrations. The modern running event, inspired by this tradition, first took place in 1981. After a pandemic hiatus, this year's race is held in memory of Bob Houston, former race organiser and Blaydon Harriers Club president, who passed away earlier in 2026.
Route and Start Time
The race begins at 7:15pm on Newcastle Quayside. Runners proceed along Sandhill, Skinnerburn Road, and Monarch Road before reaching Scotswood Road. Passing Armstrong's Factory, they continue west to cross the Tyne via Scotswood Bridge. A detour towards Derwenthaugh roundabout leads onto Chainbridge Road into Blaydon, finishing at Shibdon Playing Fields. The route closely follows the path described in Ridley's Geordie anthem.
