BBC Breakfast business presenter Peter Ruddick has returned to the studio this week, but away from the cameras his life includes a wedding to his husband Will and the heartbreaking loss of his mother.
Marriage to husband Will
Peter met his husband, Will, during the Manchester Pride Parade in 2016. The couple married in August 2024 in an intimate ceremony at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester.
They celebrated their six-month anniversary in March 2025, with Peter sharing a tribute on Instagram alongside a photo of the couple kissing. The caption read: "Six mois. Officiellement."
Peter added: "I don't think I could have made it through these past few months without my beautiful and supportive husband. What a special day this was." On their first wedding anniversary, the couple returned to the theatre where they exchanged vows to revisit special memories.
Devastating loss of his mother
In March 2025, Peter announced the death of his mother, Barbara, who passed away at the age of 70. He shared the news on Instagram with a picture of her.
"Goodness, you faced some challenges in your short 70 years with us, didn't you? So much unfairness. You really deserved better. No more so than in your final months. But there's no point in focusing on the negatives now. Not when there are so many positives," the caption read. "One of a kind. Like your dreams, gone perhaps but never truly dead. My inspiration always."
Peter marked the first anniversary of her death this year, writing: "I've got so much to tell you, Mum, about the last year.... Wherever you are, keep smiling and laughing and dancing and drinking a tipple or two."
BBC colleague Nina Warhurst wrote in the comments: "Beautiful photos. She was very proud of her boy." Another person wrote: "Such a beautiful tribute. The way you honour her speaks volumes. She would be immensely proud of you."
Peter is known as BBC Breakfast's resident business presenter, regularly delivering early morning business news segments. On Tuesday, he returned to the BBC studio with hosts Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson to discuss whether smart trolleys could be the future of the supermarket shop. "One supermarket firm is trialling a new cart, which could be the beginning of the future," he explained.
