Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Rippon has accused Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of throwing the British public's goodwill back in their faces. The veteran broadcaster made her remarks during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Friday, August 21.
Wedding memories turn to criticism
Reflecting on the news the couple are set to return to the UK she said: "I covered Harry and Meghan's wedding on Australian television, and I remember watching them after they got into the carriage at Windsor, and they were moving through all those people who were cheering them, who were so thrilled to see them."
"There was a moment on the coverage that we had for Channel Seven Australia where they looked at each other, and in my commentary, which was live, I said, 'Those two look at that. That's a wonderful private moment between those two young people. What a power couple they can be!'", she said.
Trust thrown back in our faces
She continued: "I think about how much they can do for this country, for the royal family, and look at the way that they are being embraced. And I think what they have done is they have thrown all of that back in our faces."
"When she referred to us as being racist, and he, when he wrote that self-indulgent book of a spoilt brat called Spare. I think they threw a lot of the trust that we had as a British people - they threw it back in our faces," she fumed.
Plans to return to the UK
It was announced at 10pm on Wednesday that Harry and Meghan plan to move back to Britain in a shock development more than six years after they relocated to the US. The couple will return to the UK later this month – and are said to be making their home in a non-royal residence outside of London.
They have already enrolled their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in British schools. The King, who is still living with cancer, was first made aware of the move on Sunday, only three days before it was made public, but is understood to welcome the opportunity to see more of the family both in a private and personal capacity. Their status will remain the same, with the couple not offered a "half-in-half-out" option regarding their roles.
