A TikToker who relocated from Los Angeles to London three years ago has shared a series of eye-opening cultural differences she encountered. Olamide Modupe, who moved to the UK at age 29 to pursue a master's degree, documented her experiences in a multi-part video series aimed at helping others understand the realities of expat life.
Among her revelations, Modupe noted that tap water in the UK is not fluoridated, leading to her first cavities ever. After switching to UK toothpaste, her dental issues resolved. She also highlighted stark differences in renting: in London, prospective tenants typically pay a holding deposit for one property at a time, risking loss if they withdraw, whereas in New York they apply for multiple units simultaneously.
Pay cycles also differ markedly; UK employees are paid monthly rather than bi-weekly, requiring more careful budgeting. Modupe admitted to splitting her monthly paycheck into two virtual pots to simulate a fortnightly rhythm. On the upside, she was pleased to find that holiday days are available immediately upon signing a contract, allowing for instant trip planning.
Other observations included precise measurements in bars—no free pours—and early closing times around 1am. Online shopping return policies are also stricter, with less tolerance for using items before returning. Modupe emphasised reading the return policy carefully.
