The children are expected to begin school in Britain in September, while the family is expected to live in a private, non-royal residence.
On the surface, the announcement appeared remarkably sudden. Reports of the Sussexes' move emerged only last week, with the King said to have been informed just days before their arrival. But look back over the past year and there were clues that the couple's American chapter was already changing - and that Britain was slowly creeping back into the picture.
Hollywood empire was already losing its shine
When Prince Harry and Meghan landed in California, Hollywood rolled out the red carpet. The couple signed major deals with Netflix and Spotify, with their royal departure creating enormous international curiosity and their 2022 Harry & Meghan documentary becoming a major hit. But six years removed from the heart of the monarchy, that commercial landscape looks very different.

Most British schools had broken up for their summer holidays by July, making it reasonable to infer that at least some discussions and preparations were under way before the Sussexes' return became public knowledge in August.
There was another clue in June, when it emerged Harry and Meghan were already planning to bring Archie and Lilibet to Britain for the first time since 2022. Exactly when their longer-term schooling plans were finalised has not been publicly disclosed, so it would go too far to claim a precise timeline. But enrolling two children for a September start certainly suggests considerably more preparation than an impulsive summer U-turn.

The Duke and Duchess were absent from Peter Phillips' wedding celebrations - another major family occasion unfolding without them at the centre of the royal fold. Six years later, royal weddings, family gatherings and major occasions have increasingly continued without the Sussexes.
The wedding underlined the consequences of remaining thousands of miles away: royal life and family life continued without him. Now Harry is physically back in Britain, with his children set to experience considerably more of the country and family he left behind. The announcement may have come suddenly. The preparations behind it almost certainly did not.
