Bolton's Vernon Kay has joked he's been 'outed' after he was quizzed live on BBC Radio 2 about graffiti that has mysteriously appeared about the music he listens to while enjoying a soak in the bath.
Radio 2 host questioned about graffiti claims
It was back in February 2023 that the presenter was announced as the new host of the station's mid-morning show, replacing Ken Bruce, who had hosted the programme for 31 years, in May of the same year.
Three years later, it was confirmed earlier this year that Vernon's show remains as popular as ever, as according to data from research organisation RAJAR, the 52-year-old now attracts a weekly audience of 6.8 million to his show.
Steps in the bath revelation
So there would have been millions listening when Ellie Brennan, who is familiar to listeners for presenting the travel news on BBC Radio 2's breakfast and morning shows, asked Vernon about rumours that he's a big fan of the 90s pop group Steps, after it was mentioned in newly discovered graffiti.
"I've got something to bring up with you," Ellie laughed. "Have you seen this thing going around about you online?" Vernon replied: "Oh, it's not the scrolling under the bridge, is it?" Realising he was correct, he murmured: "Yeah..." before Ellie explained: "If you haven't seen it, this is going everywhere. There's graffiti that says 'Vernon Kay listens to Steps in the bath'... Is that true?"
Vernon's response and other graffiti claims
Trying to prove his Steps knowledge, the former Family Fortunes host belted out a few lines of their hit track, 'Tragedy', before he joked: "Yeah, I've been outed!" much to Ellie's amusement.
But it's not just Vernon who is being named around a small town near Newcastle. According to the Mirror, the bizarre ramblings are popping up daily in West Denton, in Newcastle, leaving locals and people on social media speculating about who could be behind the odd 'artwork'.
Other claims sprayed onto walls in the area are 'Lorraine Kelly is barred from Wetherspoons for stealing cutlery', and 'Stacey Solomon gives Joe a sticker for helping with the dishes'.
