The Voice UK hits lowest ratings ever after Sir Tom Jones exit
The Voice UK ratings hit record low after Tom Jones axed

The Voice UK recorded its lowest ever viewing figures on Saturday, with fewer than 1.5 million tuning in, after Sir Tom Jones was replaced as a coach. The Welsh singer, 86, was dropped from the show despite being offered a role in a “different capacity”.

Ratings fall despite avoiding Strictly clash

The singing contest aired its final episode before the battles at 9pm on Saturday. Past series drew large audiences for the same stage of the competition. This year, however, ratings dropped below 1.5 million, even though the show was scheduled to avoid overlapping with Strictly Come Dancing's Movie Night, which ran for two hours and 35 minutes.

Tom Jones speaks out over exit

Sir Tom, who said he did not want to leave the show, claimed ITV made the decision some time ago. He said the reason given was “a financial difficulty with insurance”, while the network later said it wanted to “refresh” the show. He added: “They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I'm not thrilled about that. So the only thing I know right now is that there's never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who's still pretty good at his job.”

New coaches announced

ITV confirmed that Cheryl and Kelly Rowland will join will.i.am as coaches, with Aitch also making his debut. An ITV spokesperson said: “The famous red chairs will see the arrival of two musical forces making their debut as coaches. Platinum-selling rap artist Aitch and global pop icon Cheryl are set to begin their hunt for the nation's next vocal powerhouse.” The spokesperson added that ITV would like to thank Sir Tom for “all his years on The Voice UK”.

Fans launch petition

Fans started a petition to have Sir Tom reinstated, arguing that his “presence has been integral to the chemistry and success of the programme” and that his removal “has not only disappointed millions of his fans but has also deprived aspiring singers of the chance to be guided by someone of his stature and expertise.” The petition also said bringing him back would “resonate with the fans' desire for an authentic and enriching viewing experience”.
