US bombers leave RAF Fairford amid Iran terror plot warnings

Some of the strategic bombers based at RAF Fairford were seen leaving the Gloucestershire airbase yesterday, following intelligence warnings of a potential Iranian-sponsored attack. British officials were first alerted to the plot two weeks ago, after US military chiefs received reports that the base – a staging post for US strikes on Iran – was in Tehran's crosshairs, though the intelligence lacked specifics.

Arrests and Bail in Connection with the Alleged Plot

Counter-terrorism detectives last week arrested a sixth man, a British-Iranian dual national, in connection with the alleged conspiracy. Investigators are believed to be probing whether the suspects were paid by Iran to carry out an attack on Tehran's behalf. All six men – five British and one British/Iranian – have been released on bail.

Security experts warned on Sunday that Iran is following the Russian playbook of hiring local criminals to exploit fault-lines in British society, which can then be weaponised further through propaganda. Ministers were told that their conspiracies then become the “story” themselves.

Political Reactions and Warnings

The Tories warned that the revelation should prompt renewed fury over Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband’s meeting with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, which took place face to face in New York. Shadow Home Office Minister Alicia Kearns said: “If it is true that our closest allies warned of an Iranian-sponsored attack on RAF Fairford, we must seriously question Ed Miliband's judgement. It would be both absurd and a serious dereliction of duty to respond to threat warnings with handshakes for the indicated aggressor. He is emboldening our enemies, alienating our allies, and out of his depth.”

The development comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that his intelligence officers warned Britain about an Iranian-sponsored attack, though it is not clear if he was referring to the Fairford conspiracy. A senior Israeli government official said: "We warned our British counterparts of an imminent Iranian attack on RAF Fairford. That is what allies do and yet the UK Government appears hell bent on destroying a relationship that has saved countless British lives. As Israel stands strong against extremism, the UK panders to those within its own borders."

Experts Assess the Escalation in Iran's Tactics

Foreign policy experts warned on Sunday that the alleged Fairford plot represents an escalation in Tehran’s playbook. Adrian Shtuni, Associate Fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, said: “Fairford is not a carbon copy of the earlier IRGC-linked Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (HAYI) campaign that hit London and other European cities in early 2026. HAYI went after soft, symbolic targets with arson and small devices. Fairford is a bomber base used for U.S. strikes on Iran. That is the jump in ambition.

“Hiring from inside the society is also the point, and the secondary effect is political. A Hezbollah cell bombing a community centre is an external assault. A local teenager torching Jewish ambulances in Golders Green can be folded into a domestic argument about who belongs, especially if the suspects have a Muslim migrant background. The intended byproduct is to aggravate Europe’s own fractures (polarization, failed integration, antisemitism) so the attack is read as a local problem rather than a state campaign.

“That is the longer game. Tehran is copying Moscow’s hybrid playbook: disposable agents working fault lines already there, while propaganda amplifies the attack. An IRGC operative on a London street becomes the story.”
